And while we’re on the topic of female reggaetón artists…

I’m really digging La Bruja right now, so even though she’s across county lines in the Bronx, I wanted to write her up. I came across her music on MySpace a few weeks ago, and I’ve been hooked on “BrujerÃa” (“Witchcraft”) since. The sample has a jarring, jumpy feel, but that’s what draws you in. And the refrain, which is partly borrowed from a song of the same name by El Gran Combo, is pretty hard to get out of your head whether you understand Spanish or not (if not, the lyrics from the Gran Combo version here—you can pop them into a translator).
No offense to Gran Combo, who’ve been at it for four and half decades and counting, and have been playing “BrujerÃa” since around the time Bruja was born. But she really brings a lot of attitude to the song, not to mention some hard-edge sensuality-
