My friend recently turned me on to Pandora Radio, and all I have to say is this thing absolutely ROCKS! THANK YOU!
So I know I’m a little slow with this one, since it’s been around for a while, but Pandora Radio is a cool online jukebox type of thing where you put in the name of a band or a song that you like and then it generates play lists of other music it thinks you would enjoy.
I’ve been toying around with it for the past two days and it’s done a great job of pulling music that’s right up my alley, whether from bands I already know or from bands that I now realize I need to know.
My play list right now is quite simple, consisting only of the Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead and The Flaming Lips. But from those three bands, I’ve heard great live recordings from Pearl Jam, some cool new tracks from Spoon and everything from the Raconteurs to Audioslave to The Arcade Fire. There’s also been a bunch of bands I had never heard of before, but there’s a cool feature where you can learn more about the bands that pop up, from bios to discographies to similar artists.
Pandora Radio is also now doing a video series! Here’s a little Hot Buttered Rum, for all you San Fran folks and bluegrass lovers. It’s a warm reprieve from some of the colder music I’m talking about in this post!
So anyways, it turns out I apparently kinda like the band Interpol. A friend about a year or so ago had said I should give them a listen, and I’ve honestly been meaning to, but it’s just one of those bands I never really got around to exploring. A few times I’d be here working with Pandora playing from my headphones and a song would catch my ear and lo and behold it would be by Interpol. I gotta say, however, when I went to their MySpace page today for a better listen, I came away thinking they’re a band I only like in small doses. You know, if they were to come up on my shuffle I’d be psyched, but it’s not like they’re going to be my next obsession, I don’t think…
Speaking of catching my ear! The band Doves have a cool tune playing right now! They’re a power-trio from Manchester, England. Very Radioheadish. Me likey!
And yes, add this to the list of reasons why I NEED an iPhone: You can get Pandora Radio on an iPhone. Santa, if you’re out there, I know I haven’t been the best this year, but you know I don’t ever ask for much… Or Mr. Steve Jobs, my mailing address is: Diana Costello, 1 Gannett Drive, White Plains, N.Y., 10604.
