Top 10 “Train” Songs

Posted by: Errol Arne - Posted in Uncategorized on Jan 22, 2009

Recently I have been on a “top ten” kick and someone asked me for my top ten “train” songs of all time. “Drops of Jupiter” by Train is a phenomenal song but I went for songs (as opposed to the band name) with either the word “train” in it or if the song was “train” related. Well anyway here is my top 10 “train” songs:
10. Waiting for a Train – Jimmie Rodgers- The man “who started it all.” He was a brakeman on a train at the age of 14. Top that!!
9. Train of Consequences - Megadeth- This is the metal train to the land of head-banging. Enjoy the ride.
8. Love in Vain – Rolling Stones- Slowing it down a whole bit, this bluesy twist will have you waiting for the train to come into the station.
7. Rock N Roll Train – AC/DC- a newcomer but already a classic. ‘Nuff said.
6. Loco-Motion – Grand Funk Railroad- c’mon what does a train ride on? Why a “Railroad” of course and “loco” is part of locomotive.
5. Crazy Train- Ozzy- Unforgettable “All Aboard..ha, ha, ha, ha, ay, ay, ay” This song has now turned into an anthem at most sporting events. Phenomenal.
4. Train Kept a Rollin’ – Aerosmith- their classic cover appears on “Get Your Wings” an under-rated album in my opinion.
3. Peace Train – Cat Stevens- Boy do we ever need to listen to the words of this song. This is a beautiful song that hooks you in and my wish is for these words to come true.
2. Midnight Train to Georgia- Gladys Knight & The Pips- How cool is the groove in this song? Do they make songs like this anymore? I think not!!
1. Love Train – The O’Jays- It kills me that this song is now associated with a beer commercial but one can not deny the greatness. This is another song where we all need to listen and act on the lyrics.

Great list. I’m not saying I’d knock any songs off it, but I would like to throw out the Marvelettes’ “Destination Anywhere” (though I prefer the version on The Commitments soundtrack), Jeff Beck’s “People Get Ready” (second line: “There’s a train a comin’”), “Nighttrain” from Guns N Roses, “Long Train Runnin’” by the Doobie Brothers and “Hear My Train a Comin,” which Jimi Hendrix absolutely blistered at Woodstock.

I’e even add “Runaway Train” from Soul Asylum just because it’s pretty catchy and had a cool video highlighting missing kids back in the day.

Thanks Brian. It was hard to keep “Night Train” and “Long Train Running” off the list but if I extended it to the top “15,” then they would have definitely made the list. Love the other songs you mentioned as well- all solid tunes. Thanks again.

“I’m leaving on a Jet Plane”. I wish I had taken a flight, instead of a train. Every three day or more weekend, the trains are overbooked, people standing, as there is no place to sit, we are late and then rushed to board a bus. Not a good experience.

A rather limited view of the genre that should have been named “Top 10 Rock Train Songs.” Missing are the most popular train songs of all time, as measured by the number of artists who have covered them: 500 Miles, Casey Jones (the original, not the Dead song), Chattanooga Choo Choo, Choo Choo Ch’ Boogie, Freight Train, Midnight Special, Night Train, Nine Pound Hammer, Orange Blossom Special, Rock Island Line, Rollin’ in My Sweet Baby’s Arms, Take the A Train, Train 45, Wabash Cannonball, Waiting for a Train, and Wreck of the Old 97. The most popular train song, again based on number of covers, that would have to be the traditional John Henry. For a complete course on the subject, see Wikipedia’s List of Train Songs.
