“Finally made the plane into Paris
honeymooning down by the Seine
Peter Brown called to say
you can make it okay
you can get married in Gibraltar near Spain”
So it was 40 years ago today, when John Lennon and Yoko Ono tied the knot in Gibraltar — an event forever immortalized in the Beatles’ Ballad of John and Yoko, which also covered their honeymoon in Amsterdam and the frenzy that seemed to follow them from there on in.
The couple met in 1966, when Lennon visited the Indica Gallery in London for one of Ono’s art exhibitions. They soon became rock music’s most famous couple. It’s hard to believe they were only actually married or 11 years before Lennon was gunned down outside the Dakota apartments in New York City.
Whatever controversy their love affair and subsequent marriage sparked, it seems clear they were fated for a longer life together. Lennon had, in fact, finally found a comfortable place in life with her by his side, which he documented in his final album, Double Fantasy.

Happy anniversary, Yoko.
