Coming Saturday: Cuban music at “guayabera” night

June
16

Club Fomento in Union City will be hosting Cuban crooner Tony Leon this Saturday for “Fiesta de la Guayabera,” celebrating the Cuban garment and music from the island nation.

HavanaNewYork.com tells us it’s a can’t-miss event for those of you with a taste for Caribbean flavor.

DJ Julio Batista will spin Latin music all night, but the main event will be Leon, who was dubbed “el Leon del Bolero” — the lion of bolero — by legendary Cuban flutist and band leader José Antonio Fajardo.

Born in Havana, Leon has lent his voice to some of the biggest names in the genre, including Tito Puente, Cachao, Ray Baretto and Johnny Pacheco.

But the real star of the event promises to be the guayabera, the distinctive Cuban shirt exemplified by a pleated design and several pockets. Although the shirt’s origin is disputed — and other nations, including Mexico and the Philippines lay claim to it — it has generally been associated with Cuban culture.

Legend has it the shirt drew its name from the guava, or guyaba in Spanish. The story is that a Cuban woman designed it with several pockets so her husband could carry guavas in it.

Whatever the origins, Club Fomento gets credit for scripting a party around it — while requesting that men sport guayaberas for the night.

Sounds like a good way to celebrate Father’s Day weekend for those of you with kids. Actually, sounds like a pretty awesome night for anyone with legs to dance with or just ears to listen.

Anyway, things get rolling at 8 p.m. on Saturday. A $50 cover charge for the event includes dinner, open bar and entertainment. Club Fomento is at 522 38th Street, between Kennedy Boulevard and Bergenline Avenue, in Union City, NJ.

Call the club at 201-865-4562 for more info.

It was just an amazing night. Tony Leon was exceptional. His music are the best in the world. I like him a lot. There are two reasons for it. First he is a great singer. Two he is from Havana. For me Havana is the best place in the World. Because it produces the World’s best cigars. The structure, strength, taste, aroma, draw everything ig upto the mark for Cuban Cigars. I went to the concert, enjoy great music and some great cigars too.
