The top 30: Guitar players you now know

“I go where the guitar takes me,” Angus Young once said.
In that vein, since Feb. 25 the Listening Room has gone where the guitar players have taken us. That was when we started doing our weekly series, “Guitar Players You Should Know.”
Hopefully you’ve enjoyed it, and hopefully you’ve joined us in our deep-seeded love affair with the guitar — if you weren’t already there.

Our series started with Stevie Vai and last week we gave you our most recent, Frank Marino — a total of 30 guitarists who fly just under the mainstream radar or have never gotten the acclaim they’ve richly deserved.
There’s been one bass player, several posthumous profiles, a few up-and-coming stars, and some forgotten or overlooked guitar wizards. But they’re all masters at their craft. We hope you agree.
Anyway, worry not. We have quite a stack of future profiles to give you. This week we’re simply taking a break and re-capping the profiles we’ve done so far, in case you missed any.
For those of you who have been loyal readers, as well as those who are just now finding us, we thank you and hope you enjoy what we give you.
And please don’t be shy to nominate a guitar player you feel gets a raw deal.
See you next week. Here’s our list so far:
• Keb’ Mo
• Scott Gorham & Brian Robertson

Great blog about guitarists. The list is great…wonder if you mind considering a few more suggestions.
Grammy award winning fingerstyle guitarist has been compared to Ry Cooder for his work titled, “Southwest” which is similar to Cooder’s “Paris Texas” soundtrack.
Will Ackerman, the founder of Windham Hill Records is another dynamic guitarist and producer of acoustic guitar. He discovered the late Michael Hedges who was an amazing guitarist who broke new ground with Ackerman’s production skills in acoustic guitar work. Both Ackerman and Hedges should be explored for entry in this blog.
Charles Michael Brotman is Hawaii’s first Grammy Award recipient worthy of consideration for his acoustic work with slack key guitarists. George Winston is responsible for reviving the legacy of slack key players in the US, even though he is most widely known as a solo pianist.
Great post! Hope to read more soon!

My omission of an important name: Eric Tingstad is the fingerstyle guitarist Ry Cooder.

My apologies.
Why don’t guys like Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds get recognized as top guitar players? These guys play some of the most amazing music and get no recognition as quality musicians, which they are.
Slaughter;
Thanks for the feedback. Reynolds is definitely a possibility. Matthews, on the other hand, while certainly an accomplished guitarist/songwriter, is too much on the mainstream radar for the series. I’ve certainly profiled big names, but none have had the acclaim Matthews has. It is not, however, an indication of his lack of ability.
Janet;
Thanks for the suggestions. I’ll scope him out and add him to the list down the line.
Thanks to both of you for reading.
