The Making of a Rock Opera: Time for The Green Emerald to Shine

November
26

This is it. The final week before The Green Emerald, a rock opera written by Mercury Landing’s Corey J. Feldman, is performed in New York City.

greenempresswebThere are so many really cool layers to this project, including an illustrated storybook by Chris Hingel and live projections of the artwork.

As you may have seen, we here at The Listening Room have been following the progression of this saga, posting pieces of the story over the past few weeks.

Below we have the final chapters of the story — except for the last one! Feldman wants to hold off on the big conclusion until the actual performance. Fair enough. (Here’s the past posts if you need to catch up.)

You can purchase tickets and pledge money towards the printing of the hardcover storybooks by visiting this Website.

Feldman says the style of music is influenced by classic rock, jam, jazz, progressive, Latin, world music, and much more.

The Green Emerald performance will take place at 8 p.m Dec. 4th and 5th at the Bowery Poetry Club, located at 308 Bowery in Manhattan.

THE GREEN EMERALD BAND consists of 7 all-star members involved in New York’s vibrant music scene:

X – “Make Yourself a Name”- The King’s speech to his army

SPOKEN
Before Hania’s army,
Began its advance,
He thought that this might be,
His very last chance,
To inspire his soldiers,
With each spoken word.
What fear they had felt,
Because they had heard,
The war only ends,
At this world’s demise,
The future will stand when,
The King wins his prize.
The power to rule,
Over each of the lands,
King Hania would have,
The whole Earth in his hands.

SONG (these are the king’s words)

“You are my subjects,
I am your King.
Soon I will listen to,
Praises you sing.
The war will be fought,
And many will die.
We’ll starve all our foes.
Their wells will run dry.
Our world will be one.
The nations will see,
To be bound together,
Is the same as being free so,

*Make yourself a name.
Reward those who fight.
Punish those who blame.
Just do what is right.

My prophets have told,
Of an emperor supreme.
They deciphered the meaning,
Of each of my dreams.
You know we are a prototype,
For nations to see.
Until we are united,
No man can be free,
And the battle is upon us,
The fire’s burning bright.
Raise your arms into the air,
The enemy’s in sight, so

*Make yourself a name.
Reward those who fight.
Punish those who blame.
Just do what is right.”

XI – “Yours Alone”

SPOKEN

Princess Aiyana,
A Master of Zen,
With the trust of her father,
She fought many men.
Her soldiers were faithful.
Her orders were clear.
She ruled with her words.
She did not use fear.
The battles she fought,
Had poisoned her mind.
Until she soon realized,
The color she’d find.
But only her father,
Stood in the way.
Her armies were hers,
She knew they’d obey.

SONG V1
“I bestow upon my father’s land,
A gracious, loving, faithful hand.
His thoughts are black, ideas are vain.
His war will only cause you pain.
So listen up don’t be a fool,
The King did find the precious jewel but he,
Doesn’t know its secret charm and,
If he learns, it’s you he’ll harm.
Please lay down your swords, and lay down your guns,
Though the King threatens everyone who runs away,
I am his daughter, I am his next of kin,
The sin would be to fight for nothing.
I beg of you please to see the ruse,
But only you can really choose,
A life of peace where fear is dead,
And colors thrive, blue, green and red.

CHORUS
Just think twice before you fight,
For things that you’ve been told were right.
Your life is yours and yours alone.
You all deserve to have the throne.

V2
I know that you can hear each word.
A handful think it is absurd,
But many know I speak the truth.
You know my father is uncouth,
A tyrant with an evil mind,
So power hungry he is blind,
To all the needs of those he’s led,
Something must be said,
So don’t fight your brothers, your neighbors, or your friends.
You know the truth is that it wouldn’t justify the ends.
It’s time to drop your weapons, to turn on your old king.
His time had come to pass, but to his throne he will still cling.
And so I ask your faith, that I will lead you like a friend, and you’ll find beauty that you never thought you’d see until the end of your days.  All I ask is that you think this phrase:

CHORUS
XII– “The Battle of Santa Fe”

Finally the time had come,
Aiyana had to strike.
Though different from her father,
Their thoughts were still alike.
Her soldiers dropped their weapons,
But their comrades didn’t know,
That half their armies, friends, and brothers,
Had something to show.
They didn’t see the point in dying,
Young and without cause.
Their lives were good though yearning still,
They couldn’t see their flaws.
Aiyana knew the truth was there,
She thought of the blue ring.
With half an army mutiny,
She went to face the King.

SONG
The King refused to leave his throne,
His daughter he did hate.
And so she came to see him one last,
Time, it was her fate,
To battle her own father,
Both experts at their craft,
Of martial arts and ninja skills,
Although the King’s were daft.

A valiant fight at first with swords,
Then they fought hand to hand.
The King then struck Aiyana down,
Her face smashed in the sand.
With blood on her face she jumped back up
Pointed at the jewel
Which proved he was a fool.

CHORUS
Ephemeral, we’re fading fast.
The Emerald was found to last,
Above the King and his whole clan,
The stone had always known his plan.
His life he worked, but all for naught,
The knighted fighters he had taught,
The Zen of martial arts, but they’d quit,
Or rebel against his lack of wit.

V2
A moment’s pause was all she had to,
Grab her sword again.
She jabbed the blade into his chest then,
Cried as her dad bled.  He said,

“How could you do this to me,
My blood runs through your veins.
I loved you and taught you all I know,
There’s nothing left but pain.”

“I’m sorry father, what’s done is done,
I wish we had more time.
I love you but you have been wrong,
The Emerald is now mine.”
“My dear Aiyana I must say,
The jewel is just a myth.
I’ve asked it every question,
I could think to stump it with.”

CHORUS

“You didn’t think so simple,
The question no one’s asked.
The Emerald is smart with its,
Intentions always masked.”
“Well now I die my blood has spilled.
I almost lived my dream.
It’s your turn now to guide our land.
You are a noble queen.
