In the spirit of Jorge’s “guitar players you should know” series, I’m going to write about a guitar player you should watch. She is Marissa Paternoster and she is killing fans and critics with her aggressive, punk playing as the lead guitarist/singer for the Screaming Females.
I met Paternoster briefly after a gig in NYC a few months ago as she steered me to which of the band’s album I should buy. I bought Power Move. She’s young, barely five feet tall, and almost bashful. That’s amazing considering that on stage she is fierce, her voice is intense, and she shreds really hard in jaw-dropping guitar solos.
Marissa’s playing is getting lots of attention in the music rags and blogs, including a mention in the Village Voice as best guitar shredder of 2009. She has carried the band to that ‘it’ place and they (Marissa, drummer Jarret Dougherty and bassist King Mike) have opened for Dinosaur Jr., Arctic Monkeys and Dead Weather (the band with Jack White, one of the best guitarists ever.) It’s a big leap for the New Brunswick basement band, but the Screaming Females can still be found playing lots of small venues around the area. Here’s a glimpse at what she can do.
