A BBC poll earlier this year determined that Graham Coxon was the 15th greatest guitarist of the past 30 years — a list topped by John Frusciante and Slash.
Fair enough, but Coxon fans would not-so-politely suggest that the former Blur lead guitarist belongs higher on any ranking of modern-era guitar players.
It would be hard to argue with them.

Born in West Germany, Coxon met bassist Alex James while studying art in London. The two went on to form Seymore, a band that would later become Blur in 1989.
The band’s studio albums and on-stage performances garnered international attention, gaining the band wide acclaim. Coxon also deployed his artistic abilities, including designing the cover of Blur’s 1999 release ’13.’
Coxon left the band in 2002 amid internal disputes in the band and alleged substance abuse issues. But he never strayed from his music.
In all, Coxon released seven solo albums — most of them while playing with Blur. His latest, Spinning Top, was released last year. He’s also done art and design work on many of his solo releases, and co-founded Transcopic, an independent record label.
In addition to solo work Coxon has also returned to Blur last year for a reunion, which included a new recording by the band earlier this year.
It’s great to see them back together. But keep in mind that it ultimately doesn’t matter where he plugs in. He’s a pleasure to listen to.
